I have no idea what kind of media coverage this is getting in the rest of the country . . . here in Sacramento, this seems to be the only news worth talking about.
Two humpback whales, a mother and her calf, have mistakenly swum into the San Francisco Bay and up the Sacramento River to the West Sacramento shipping channel, where they are now effectively trapped. According to the "experts" (and there are MANY), the whales' instinct to head north is keeping them from finding their way the 70 miles back to the ocean. The whales cannot survive indefinitely in fresh water and at least one of them is wounded, so massive efforts are underway to try to lure the whales back downriver, hopefully before it's too late.
In the meantime, Sacramento's news venues have devoted 80% of their newspaper ink and website space to covering every conceivable aspect of the story. One particularly entertaining ongoing story is the contest to name the whales. Worst suggestion so far: "Hillary and Pelosi." Better (funnier) suggestions:
"Bonnie and Clyde"
"Benny and Joon"
"Moby and Dick"
"Humperdink and Humperdonk"
"Arnold and Maria" (in tribute to our illustrious Governor)
"Dumb and Dumber"
and my personal favorite . . .
"Saca Ja Whale and Poca Humpus"
Weigh in with your own whale-inspired wording here.
And if you're really into it, you can contribute to the ongoing fiction story here.
